Stallion Book Snippets #2 - Nathaniel & Zarak

Nathaniel has bred no fewer than three outstanding Classic winners in his stallion career.

First-crop daughter Enable emerged from his first crop and won the Oaks en route to becoming one of the best racemares of the modern era, while Channel scored in a competitive renewal of the Prix de Diane a few years later.

The sire’s third Classic winner arrived this season, when Desert Crown ran away with the Derby to remain unbeaten in three starts. He is expected to take high rank in the middle-distance division when he returns from injury in 2023.

Nathaniel has supplied the other Group 1 winners God Given, Lady Bowthorpe and Mutamakina, among 49 black-type performers on his roll of honour. He is also the damsire of classy performers Haskoy, Novakai, Silver Knott, Tribalist and Zellie.

The son of Galileo stands at Newsells Park Stud at a fee of £15,000.

Zarak has turned out winners at an extraordinary strike-rate of 68% winners to runners.

The beautifully bred son of Dubawi and Zarkava delivers quality as well as quantity, with 15 black-type performers among his first two crops including Prix de Sandringham winner Purplepay and Classic-placed fillies La Parisienne and Times Square.

The market has been quick to react, with his third crop of yearlings – still bred off his introductory covering fee of €12,000 – selling for prices of €200,000, €180,000, €160,000 and so on.

His daughters have also been lighting up the breeding-stock sales, with Purplepay making €2 million at Arqana in December 2021 and Times Square selling for €1.25m at the same venue this year.

Zarak will stand at an increased covering fee of €60,000 in 2023.
