The 16th edition of Paul Ferguson’s Jumpers To Follow was published by Weatherbys on 14th September and the bumper 224 pages once again whets the appetite for the upcoming National Hunt season.

The book is packed full of familiar names and more importantly, those less-exposed horses who could well shine throughout the winter months.

As well as Paul's 40 Leading Prospects for the upcoming National Hunt season, 20 top prospects from Ireland feature in the 'Across The Sea' section, and leading jockeys, including Brain Hughes and Jamie Codd, give their opinions in the 'A View From The Saddle' section.

Further content comes in the shape of 'Around The Yards', Paul's personal view into stables up and down the UK, picking out the horses with most potential from each, a look at this season's Point-to-Point graduates, the latest imports from France, the trends for the season's major races, and picks from pundits such as Graham Cunnigham, Rishi Persad, Sam Cunningham, and Tony Keenan.

To give you a taste for the content of Jumpers To Follow, and point you the way of a winners or two, Paul has provided three of his top horses to follow for the season below.

GOLDEN SON 
Trainer: Paul Nicholls
A Grade 2 winner over hurdles in France, he is an exciting recruit to the Paul Nicholls stable and is a horse who features in a couple of different sections of Jumpers To Follow 2022-2023. Runner-up on his chase debut at Auteuil, that form reads well (winner won a Grade 1 next time) and he would appeal as a smart prospect for novice chases, in receipt of the age-allowance. Now in the ownership of Johnny de la Hey, there is also the option of switching back to hurdles, although I wouldn’t mind seeing him win a couple of novice chases and then be considered for Cheltenham’s December Gold Cup, a race which Nicholls has won twice with four-year-olds in the past, Unioniste and Frodon.

MELLIFICENT
Trainer: Jonjo O'Neill
Runner-up on her sole start for trainer Lorna Fowler, Mellificent has since joined Jonjo O’Neill and should be capable of winning a mares’ bumper on reappearance. A half-sister to Tamar Bridge (a soft and heavy ground winner over 2m4f for Olly Murphy), she should stay further in time and is one of five horses from Jackdaws Castle to feature among this year’s 40 Leading Prospects. If she does indeed make a winning start for her new connections, it could be that she is aimed at a Listed bumper, before switching to hurdles.

WINCHMORE HILL
Trainer: Donald McCain
One of the horses to feature in the Point-to-Point Graduates section of this year’s publication, he is a five-year-old by Walk In The Park, who finished runner-up on his sole start for Ellmarie Holden. Having moved like the best horse in the race for the most part, a slight error (minor peck on landing) at the final fence probably proved to be the difference between winning and losing, and he should win plenty of races in the North. He is now in training with Donald McCain, for owner Tim Leslie.
